How to Compose Your Own Music

To begin, let me explain about the author. I'm an avid lover of music. I've loved listening to music since I was a little kid, and I can recall listening to music almost every day on the MD boombox at home, so much so that my parents were worried about me. In the upper grades of elementary school, I began to play musical instruments after school, even renting out the school music room with the teacher's approval.

Since junior high school, I’ve continued doing that, but I've also branched out into composing and arranging music using my own laptop computer. In the early days, I had to rely on my own intuition, or what is called sense of music, so I had to work on it while strengthening my sense of sound piece by piece, even though I went through a thousand hardships.

Since high school, I got a chance to study music in earnest, and while learning music theory, I also developed my instrumental playing skills on percussion and strings by participating in the brass band and the high school orchestra. In the process, a human tuning fork-type of perfect pitch sense seems to have blossomed, and I was able to recognize what pitch the sound of all the notes, even when they are out of tune.

This was a great step forward in my sense of sound.

Now, I currently enjoy creating and arranging various types of music using these experiences, the knowledge gained from them, and the sense of sound that has developed greatly over the past few years. These are my general experiences with music.

With the preliminaries out of the way, it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty. First, let me explain my compositional style. As mentioned earlier, I've experienced playing several different instruments. Specifically, drums, percussion, and viola. I also play the piano and keyboards, but I mostly use them when composing or arranging music, and unfortunately, I don't have any great skills to show in public.

However, since I've been exposed to both light music like rock and pop music etc. and classical music, I'm working on creating music with the underlying goal of creating symphonic music such as symphonic rock and symphonic pop, rather than simply creating music in accordance with any genre.

How does one create such distinctive music? Take the music used in Studio Ghibli's works, or Ghibli music as it's commonly called, for example. The composer of the Ghibli soundtrack is a Japanese composer named Joe Hisaishi. His style is unique, and even without knowing who the composer is, you may think it's Hisaishi just by listening to it. A friend of mine who calls himself a Ghibli geek said, “I can tell just by listening to it, though it's hard to put into words.”

One reason it may be hard to put into words is that Hisaishi's musical style is rather unique and interesting in its chord progression. His music is often in the minor key, and the chord progression is basically like that of his music. This makes the music memorable to the ear.

If you compare the music in "Spirited Away" with the music used in "HANA-BI", you may find that they're somewhat similar. Although “HANA-BI” is not a Studio Ghibli's film, it’s a movie produced by Takeshi Kitano who is famous in the comedy industry as Beat Takesh.

But both soundtracks were composed by Joe Hisaishi, and both soundtracks bring to mind a grand and desolate landscape. The grandeur is probably due to the use of orchestral music in his songs. And the dreary feeling is due to his use of the minor key and his unique chord progression.

Thus, unique chord progressions and original melodies are very important in creating one's original music. However, it's difficult to achieve this without a lot of experience in composition or arrangement, and it's very important in how many ideas you can generate and how you can give shape to them.

I started composing and arranging music when I was in the 1st grade in junior high school, so I've been doing it for about nine years now. Although I'm still at a level where I cannot be called an expert, I intend to continue my composition and arrangement activities while thinking carefully about what kind of music I should create to establish my own musical style.

作曲活動をするために考えるべきこととは何か

最初に筆者について説明する。私は音楽を心から愛している。小さい頃から音楽を聴くのが大好きで、物心がついたときには家にあったMDラジカセでほぼ毎日音楽を聴いており、親に心配されたほどだ。小学校高学年になってからは放課後に先生に無理を言って学校の音楽室を貸し切って楽器の演奏もするようになった。中学時代からはそれだけではなく、自分のノートPCを用いて作曲や編曲をするということにも手を伸ばしてきた。最初こそ自分の感覚、所謂音感というものに頼るしかなかったので、千辛万苦という状況に陥りつつも少しずつではあるが音感を鍛えつつ取り組んできた。

高校からは本格的に音楽を学ぶことが出来る機会に恵まれたので、音楽理論についてしっかりと学びつつ、楽器演奏に関しては吹奏楽部や学校の管弦楽団に参加することによって打楽器や擦弦楽器の演奏法についても鍛え上げてきた。そうするうちに人間音叉型絶対音感というものが開花したらしく、ピッチがズレていてもその音がどの音なのかが捉えられるようになった。これにより、自分の音感が大きく前進したのだった。現在ではそういった経験やそこから得られた知識、この数年間で大きく発展した音感を活かし、様々な楽曲を制作したりアレンジしたりすることを楽しんでいる。以上が、音楽に関する私の大まかな経験談である。

   前置きはここまでにして、そろそろ本題に入っていく。まず、自分の作曲のスタイルについて。先述の通り、私は数種類の楽器を演奏してきた経験がある。具体的には、ドラム、パーカッション、ヴィオラなどである。一応ピアノやキーボードも扱うことがあるが、それは作編曲のために用いるというのが殆どであり、残念ながら人前で披露出来るような大それた技術があるわけではない。しかしこのように、私はロックやポップスなどの軽音楽やクラシック音楽の両方に触れてきているので、単純なジャンルに沿った音楽を作る、というよりはシンフォニックロックやシンフォニックポップといった、「シンフォニックな音楽」を作るということを根底にある目標として楽曲制作に取り組んでいるのである。

では、このようにある種で特徴的な音楽というのはどのようにすれば作れるのか、自分なりの考えを述べていく。例えば、日本人ならば誰もが知っているスタジオシブリの作品に使われる音楽、俗にいうジブリ音楽というのを考えてみるとしよう。ジブリ音楽の作曲を手掛けているのは久石譲という日本の作曲家だ。彼の作風は独特で、予め作曲者を知らずとも、その楽曲を少し聴いただけで久石譲の作品なのではないかと感じることもあるかもしれない。

彼の音楽について、ジブリオタクと自称する私の友人は「聴いただけで分かるな、言葉にはしづらいけど」と述べた。何故言葉にしづらいのか。それについて私はこう考える。私の友人が音楽にあまり精通していないというのも理由の１つとなり得るが、それ以前に久石氏の音楽スタイルというのはやや面白く、独特なコード進行で音楽が成り立っているのである。彼の音楽では多くの楽曲で短調が使われており、基本的には似たようなコード進行で音楽が進んでいく。それによって耳に残る音楽となるのだ。

「千と千尋の神隠し」に出てくる楽曲と、こちらはスタジオジブリの作品ではないが、お笑いの業界ではビートたけしという名前で有名な北野武がかつて「HANA-BI」という映画を制作しており、これに使われている楽曲を比較してみると何となく作風が似ているのが分かるかもしれない。勿論だが、HANA-BIの楽曲を作曲したのも久石譲だ。これは私の個人的な感覚となるが、どちらの楽曲を聴いても壮大かつ寂れたような景色が浮かんでくる。壮大なのは、彼の楽曲には管弦楽が用いられているからだろう。そして寂れたような感じがするのは短調かつ彼の独特なコード進行によるものだと私は思っている。

このように、独特なコード進行や独創的なメロディというのは自分の音楽を作るうえで非常に大事になってくるものだ。しかしこういうのは簡単に実現出来るようなものではないというのもまた事実である。作編曲に関する多くの経験がなければ実現することは難しく、どれだけのアイデアを生み出せるか、そしてそれらを形に出来るかといったことが非常に重要になってくる。

自分が「作編曲」というものを始めたのは中学時代なので、現時点ではおよそ9年間作編曲活動を続けてきたこととなる。まだまだエキスパートとはいえないレベルだが、自分の音楽のスタイルというのを確立させるためにはどのような楽曲を作っていけばいいのか、というのをしっかりと考えながら作編曲活動を続けていこうと思っている。
